USB or Solder?

Post by kb2idx »

Can anyone tell me if there is any noticeable difference between routing your Nextion screen via the USB port w/ttl
or soldering directly to the modem? Good, bad, no diff? still sucking power either way.

If you plan to update the screen config (HMI / TFT file on the Nextion display) often, I'd use USB, if you don't plan to do that - I'd use the modem connection, usually makes for a more compact setup.

Soldering direct to the MMDVM Board looks nicer! in builds! BUT using this method you need to know how to program the nextion commands for the screen! as they are different to using the TTL USB adapter...

If you want to share that, I can drop a script on Pi-Star to do it...

Using the MMDVM port will limit the transfer speed to Nextion display to 9k6bds 'cause MMDVM does communicate with SBC at 115k2bds so, unable to deal that speed with Nextion... Too much information to transfer... Voice and display data so, it doesn't work properly.
To reach that speed HS-Nextion you better use USB-TTL and connect the Nextion to it.
If you do that way remember the following points:
-Set the Nextion default speed to 115k2bds
(You may use Nextion Editor and the USB-TTL to debug the HMI to send bauds=115200)
-Use ON7LDS L3 HS layout type at Nextion Pi-Star configuration
-Set port USB at Nextion Pi-Star configuration

This doesn't mean AT ALL Nextion won't work properly when Nextion port at MMDVM used but... You may notice some kind of "delay" when populating the fields on the screen if used this way.

Said that,
Just a reminder/help...
USB-TTL interface can also be used to load TFT to Nextion in a really faster way than SD card by the Nextion Editor, even saving more time if reloading TFT when changes are not too big.

I hope this information will help you to take the better option for you.

So sorry if you notice "poor English" (grammar or syntax) as it's my third language and I'm getting older... :)
